The Seychelles Sustainable Tourism Label awarded certification to Le Meridien Fisherman’s Cove on Thursday 27th June 2019. Lynn Tirant, the hotel’s Marketing Communications Manager, was present to receive the certificate from Didier Dogley, the Minister for Tourism, Civil Aviation, Ports and Marine on behalf of the hotel. The small ceremony took place at the ministry’s headquarters at Botanical House, Mont Fleuri in the presence of Anne Lafortune, the Principal Secretary for Tourism and Janice Bristol, Senior Officer for Product Development in the Tourism Department.

As travelers are becoming more aware and sensitive to environmental issues, the demand for green products and services continue to grow. The SSTL is a programme that responds to these challenges and recognizes the opportunities for the tourism industry. It is a sustainable tourism management and certification programme designed specifically for use in Seychelles. Presently applicable to tourism accommodation of all sizes, the SSTL is voluntary, user-friendly and designed to inspire more efficient and sustainable ways of doing business. The vision of the SSTL is that all tourism accommodation in Seychelles integrate sustainability practices in their business operations. Le Meridien Fisherman’s Cove is the 20th property to be certified under the label.

The hotel, operating under the world renowned Marriot brand, has taken the steps to reduce its consumption by investing in water, waste and energy management technologies and practices which are all vital to the sustainability of Seychelles as a small island. In terms of conservation, one of the major activities of the hotel is undertaken in partnership with Marine Conservation Society Seychelles for a reef restoration programme in which guests can participate.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Dogley congratulated Le Meridien Fisherman’s Cove for its efforts at achieving SSTL certification. Ms. Tirant commended the Ministry for driving the programme and reaffirmed the hotel’s commitment in contributing to the sustainability of the Seychelles tourism industry.
